Hoyts Reopens after Christchurch Quake

Media release - Hoyts Reopens after Christchurch Quake, one of the few 3D cinemas in Christchurch has reopened after repairing extensive damage from the Christchurch earthquake.

It has taken months of repair work and cost almost $1 million in construction materials and new equipment but Hoyts will tomorrow reopen its popular Northlands cinema.
With eight weeks of lost revenue, a wrecked cinema screen, and the loss of a $100,000 3D digital projector Hoyts management say they’re pleased to have opened in time for the summer blockbuster season.
For Christchurch locals the timing couldn’t be better with parents about to be given a holiday reprieve with Megamind, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and Tron: Legacy all launching in 3D this month.
Hoyts General Manager Brian Eldridge says anxious Christchurch movie buffs had been emailing him up to two or three times a day asking when the cinema would reopen.
“We are pleased to be reopening the cinema and providing an entertainment centre for residents in the north of Christchurch and surrounding areas. As one of the few 3D cinemas in the city we have been told how much we’ve been missed!”
“The team at Hoyts Northland looks forward to welcoming our loyal customers and attracting some new ones as well with our refurbished venue,” he says.
Staff who had been relocated to other areas and paid during the closure will also return, he says.
Eldridge says the company is looking forward to a busy summer season, which he believes will be buoyed by a host of blockbuster movies.
“There are some fantastic 3D movies on the way including Transformers 3, Cars 2 and Green Lantern along with James Cameron’s SANCTUM, we are sure with these movies we will attract not only our past customers but a host of new moviegoers keen to experience 3D cinema.”
